General Anaesthesia
At Aspiring Smiles Dental, we recognise that some patients—particularly those with dental anxiety or undergoing complex procedures—may benefit from general anaesthesia (GA) for a more comfortable experience.
Please note: We provide this service in collaboration with our anaesthetist at private hospital facilities across three different locations.
What Is General Anaesthesia?
General anaesthesia induces a controlled, sleep-like state using a combination of intravenous medications and inhaled gases. While under general anaesthesia, you are completely unconscious and do not feel pain, move, or respond to sensations. It allows your brain to temporarily stop processing pain signals, making even the most involved dental procedures feel effortless from your perspective.
Who Administers It?
General anaesthesia is always administered and closely monitored by a qualified anaesthetist, often in collaboration with an experienced medical team. During your procedure, your vital signs—such as heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure—are carefully observed to ensure your safety and wellbeing at all times.
Is It Right for Me?
General anaesthesia may be recommended if:
-
You experience extreme dental anxiety or phobia
-
You require multiple or complex procedures in one visit
-
You have special needs that make in-chair treatment challenging
-
You’re undergoing surgical procedures such as wisdom teeth removal or dental implants
Before your procedure, we’ll conduct a full assessment and discuss the anaesthesia process with you in detail, including preparation, what to expect, and aftercare.
FAQs:
Yes, general anaesthesia is very safe when administered by qualified professionals.
You’ll be given specific instructions prior to your appointment, which may include fasting for several hours before the procedure. It’s also important to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you afterward, as you may feel drowsy for some time.
Recovery times can vary, but most patients begin to feel more alert within a few hours. Full recovery may take 24–48 hours. We’ll provide you with post-operative instructions and check in with you to ensure everything is progressing well.
General anaesthesia is ideal for patients with severe dental anxiety, special needs, or those undergoing complex or lengthy treatments. Your suitability will be assessed during a consultation with your dentist and anaesthetist.
Some discomfort is normal depending on the procedure, but we’ll ensure you have a personalised pain management plan in place. Our team will guide you through aftercare to make your recovery as smooth and comfortable as possible.
